A lesson on rhythm

As guitarists we can find ourselves focusing endlessly on the chord shapes and scales and all the work our fretting hand does. Meanwhile our rhythm hand is wondering what it should be doing and finds that it gets lost about whether to play a downstroke or up stroke .

One of the tricks is to keep the rhythm coming from the elbow with a relaxed wrist bent in towards the guitar. Then focus on playing evenly. With your left hand change chords but do not stop if you make a mistake. Play through the mistake. Gradually your fretting hand will learn to keep up with your rhythm hand. You will be making simple music very quickly this way.

Remember in this exercise to keep up the momentum EVEN when the chording hand sounds terrible. We are learning to keep a flow going.

We all make mistakes. The art is to rectify them so quickly no one else notices
